Of the continental margin Atlantic

An essential feature of the continental margin of North America – a broad shelf zone, which occupies 10.3% of the bottom area of the ocean . The shelf has a significant spread in the north-west – in the coast of Greenland , Labrador , Nova Scotia, where it reaches a width of 300-400 km. For the offshore area is characterized by the development of primordial forms of glacial terrain , deep-sea trenches and canyons, elevated cans are gigantic cuestas composed of rocks of Mesozoic age. Drilling and Proterozoic rocks revealed that entitles you to consider these banks as part of the flooded NorthAmerican platform .

Man in the Sea

For many centuries in all people and peoples of this cry had the same sense of alarm: “From the man was a trouble! Help me! “In the future, mankind will give those words a different meaning. Constantly increasing world population will become more and more closely within the land, and it goes into the sea – will win at the sea of space for their settlements.

Table of water source

Nature Zone Total moistening (atm precipitation, river runoff), the minimum
Annual

increase in plant mass, kg / ha

Tundra and tundra 300-350 10-40
Middle taiga 460-470 40-80
Deciduous forests 550-600 80-100
Forest-steppe 580 100-150
Steppe 465 90-140
Subtropical semi-desert 320 10-25
Restricting the tropical savanna 920 150-300
Evergreen tropical forests 1320 300-500
From this table it is clearly visible uneven distribution of water resources in natural areas of the planet. A specific locations on Earth, these differences may be much higher.  For example, in India there is a meteorological station Cherapundzhi, where the annual rainfall record rainfall – 23 mm thousand, and in Peru at weather stations in La Zhoya did not get a single millimeter of rain per year. Therefore, on Earth as many other deserts I drylands. Whole areas where prosperity, or even in excess of a variety of natural resources – the sun’s heat, fertile and suitable for the cultivation of the soil – has not enough water, precipitation.

Residents of the bottom

The remains of living organisms, dead in the upper layers of the ocean, passing through the twilight zone of intermediate depths, then settle in the dark as a moonless night, deep ocean water column. Drops of this unfortunate “Rain” are almost the sole source of food for local inhabitants.

Life in the Ocean

It is known that in today’s oceans are home to over 160 thousand species of animals and about 10 thousand species of algae. This number is constantly growing, so-called in studies in the ocean regularly found more and more new species and varieties of living plants and animals. Only during the expedition to the Challenger, which was already mentioned above, it was discovered 4,417 unknown to science species of marine organisms, which increased the number of species known at that time, several times.

Universal provider

The ancestors of the biggest animal on Earth – China – about 70 million years ago are gone from the land into the water. Gone, because in the sea, they found a much better habitat conditions. ”Wisdom” China is explained simply – here, in the ocean, filled to the brim with food, whale offspring daily adding to the weight of ten pounds, is fast becoming a multi-ton colossus, and then peacefully there for many years, the fruits of their own kind.

Fresh water

Yes, yes, plain water – it’s too precious a treasure! With the increasing world population and continued development of the production of people every year more and more convinced of this, radical way to solve the water problem could be the development of virtually inexhaustible supplies of seawater. Our country is one of the first to seawater desalination. , Russia’s first desalination plant was established back in 1881, in Krasnovodsk. Now worldwide, not counting the small desalination on marine vessels, has been working for about a hundred of large desalination plants.

Underground Sea

One of the most interesting to unravel the mystery and XX. scientists call the discovery of underground “seas” – a vast reservoir of fresh or brackish water in porous rocks under the desert. They lie at different depths. So, in the Kara Kum desert upper limit of the underground “sea” is at a distance of 30 m from the ground, in the Sahara – 150 -200 m. Underground Sea still poorly understood by science, and still in their “behavior” more questions than answers. For example, it is known that the level of the water surface fluctuates constantly, but for whatever reason and at what intervals occur groundwater inflow and ebb – it’s science is still unknown.

Coral Island

One of the most ambitious, of unimaginable complexity and at the same time amazingly beautiful structures created by living creatures on Earth, are the coral reefs and coral islands – the atolls. Largest atoll in the mass than any of the structures erected by man in history!

Islands-”ghosts” in the southern waters

There are many examples of geographical “closed” in the vast oceans. Especially a lot of them had to do in his priantarkticheskih waters.

For several reasons. First, it incorrectly identifies the position of an object in the ocean.Secondly, the icebergs were deceptive appearance. A perfect example of the first – Bouvet Island. This single rock has been turned by sailors of centuries past in a arhipelag.Kitolovy, maneuvering in dense fog, could only roughly determine its position in the ocean.  Therefore, returning repeatedly to the same place, they are unaware that taking the land in sight for the new island and each time it was applied to the card.

Gold from seawater

In the waters of the oceans dissolved many millions of tons of gold. Is it possible to remove it from the water? Such a problem is the interest of scientists, and not only scientists, has for at least a hundred years.

The first report of detection of gold in sea water, made by a member of the French Academy of Sciences, dates back to 1886 after the First World War, this question has already been seriously studied in Germany, when it was imposed on the country to pay compensation. German scientists during this period persistently tried to find a way to extract gold from seawater.  As a result of these efforts ocean sciences has been enriched with new data: In search of the area where the water would have more gold, the German research vessel “Meteor” scoured along and across the waters of the Atlantic during the 1924 – 1928 years. It has been found, however, that the concentration of gold rarely exceeds a few thousandths of a milligram per ton of water. The highest content of gold was discovered in the South Atlantic, and made it about 1 mg of the precious metal in 1 m of water. Subsequently, the concentration of dissolved gold was determined by many researchers.  The data obtained often differed by more than a thousand times, and therefore the question of the average content of gold in the waters of the ocean, until recently, remained open.

Appropriateness of Nature

It turns out that even long-dead leaves of trees and shrubs continue to drink our moisture, participating in the great water cycle in nature. and the matter is this. We know that the rains are the cause of dust, bearing in saturated humidity air. They have become centers of condensation (precipitation water) – they form water droplets, which then spilled to the ground as rain. After a series of studies, scientists have concluded that most of the dust particles, condensation of moisture from the air – the remains of fallen and rotting leaves, blown by winds in the atmosphere.

Magnesium

Magnesium from sea water was first obtained on an industrial scale during the Second World War in Britain, which has its own reserves on land. This method was applied at the same time in the U.S. and has been so affective that superseded all other methods of producing magnesium, at least in coastal states. Now he’s getting out of seawater is practiced in many countries and is about a quarter of total world production of this metal.

Giant waves

The sailors floating in the Pacific Ocean, have repeatedly noted a strange phenomenon: in full with no wind on the surface of the ocean drilling giant water bank. At this point, seismographs did not record the vibrations of the seabed or the eruption of underwater volcanoes. Comments from U.S. oceanographers have identified the frequency of occurrence of the giant trees of water: the interval between them is two weeks to a month. At the Marianas and the Carolinas built special monitoring station. Scientists called these trees "waves on the planet, that they arise due to the pull of the moon in the Tierra del Sol m somehow related to the mechanism of the tides.

Icebergs – a source of fresh water

In the Northern Hemisphere icebergs born in the glaciers covering Greenland, the Severnaya Zemlya and other islands of the Arctic Ocean. To go to the sea ice is broken with a volley bang languages dumped at sea canyon and huge chunks of ice of fresh water. These are the icebergs. In other words, the formation of icebergs in the ocean near Antarctica. John Isaac came up with a tempting idea – big iceberg pribuksirovat for banks suffering from anhydrous California, and the water formed in the melting iceberg, to use for irrigation of arid lands. According to many scientists, this project is virtually easy to implement, and promises substantial benefits. According to preliminary calculations, the shipping iceberg volume of 10 million m3 and the construction of the sea near the depot, which collect fresh water from melting under the hot California sun, the iceberg, not exceeding $ 1,000,000. The cost obtained in this case fresh water is less than $ 100 million!  We can assume that the colossal mass of ice, which even in the hot California climate will melt very slowly, could cause an enhanced condensation of atmospheric moisture and precipitation of additional rainfall. And it would increase supplies of water in the reservoir and some decrease in the dry climate surrounding the thawing iceberg stretch of coastline. This use of icebergs can be done not only in California but also in other arid areas of the globe, primarily in Australia.

Who killed the "Titanic "

It happened on the night of 14 not April 15, 1912 A great ocean liner Titanic, the beauty and pride of the British passenger fleet made a transatlantic flight is not London, New York. Just buzzing sound engines of the ship. Everything was in order, and the imminent foggy night and had no cause for alarm pleads not see another team and the number of passengers who filled the ship's cabin. It was 23:30, when the peaceful life is not the ship was suddenly interrupted by a burst of sheer power. The ship shuddered as a deafening roar of the explosion of the boilers of the steam room. The huge ship, heel to toe, starting sink.Confused passengers rushed on deck. Panic. The crew heroically fought for every human life. But 2,200 passengers were rescued only 675 and half a thousand people met their tragic end in the deep ocean. What happened in the night! Who is to blame? compared to what "Titanic "? Arrecife, Arrecife? None. The depth of the Atlantic Ocean in the disaster zone reaches several thousand meters, and there are shoals and reefs here. Maybe another boat that violated safety standards and was walking without identification lights? None. Not one ship was at the time of the sinking of the Titanic in the waters of this area. The old floating mine? None. While ocean water has not been obstructed by this monstrous weapon of destruction. So what? Water? Yes, the culprit was water. "Titanic " sailed into the water and hit the water, but only in solid form or as scientists say, with the solid phase of water – ice. An enormous iceberg – an iceberg – became the way "Titanic " was the cause of his death. Blow struck an iceberg, was so strong that the ship does not help to 13 watertight bulkheads, which in the opinion of the owners of the Titanic, "must always find its condition in any collision. Coating such as tin colossal vsporotaya sank.

Low yield

Refined Chinese civilization of the Ming dynasty was swept away by wild Manchus in 1644, became the reason for this four-year drought: Chinese soldiers stopped paying wages, food went up, the hungry peasants revolted. Yet to assess the extent to which the rise and decline of medieval Novgorod contributed to warming IX-XI centuries, and the Little Ice Age XIV-XVIII centuries. And not only the Afghan war, but seven malourozhaynyh years (seven lean cows!) Contributed to the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.  The consequences of modern warming debate is not only scientists but also policy in intergovernmental meetings.

Air movement

In moving air the forces of inertia of two families – the centrifugal, reflecting the desire to maintain its orientation in the curved trajectories of air particles, and tends to keep the velocity of the Coriolis force. But the point of beginning of the movement itself revolves around the Earth’s axis, the absolute transfer rate is higher in low latitudes, where one day the surface is a longer path around the axis. Therefore, the transition from high to low latitudes, the air particles tend to maintain a lower speed, and from low to high – great.  Caused by this inertia force deflects the particles of air and water left in the North and to the left – and the Southern Hemisphere. This force increases from the equator to the pole. In the lower troposphere (up to a height of 1-2 km) the important role played by the friction force.

Peru during

Along the western coast of South America from south to north is moving a huge stream of cold water, which comes to Cape Blanco (4 * South latitude). Om has a greenish-white and greenish-olive color due to the abundance of diatoms algae in it. The water that flows cold, not only and not so much because of the influx of Antarctic waters, but because of the rise of water from great depths. Strong easterly winds – trade winds blowing from the continent – was removed from the beach with a hot upper layer of water, which rise up to replace the cold depths of the masses.
